5. Why did you want to build your own board? Always wanted to ...thought it might be a fun addiction. (It is)

6. Shape of finished board? Very similar to a Walden mini magic.

9. How was your board building experience? Awesome. Gave me a new appreciation for the price tag on a board. But be careful...It's more addicting than any video game. I was lost in a time warp. Girlfriend standing at the garage door whining about going to dinner...me standing there covered in dust and telling her five more min...and an hour later...
10. Did you use videos, books, web, other? yes. WEB mostly. video, e-books

11. What videos, books, web, other did you use? Youtube was super helpful actually. ehow.com, Swaylocks, and an e-book. (best advice...learn to walk away...stop trying to "even the table legs" before you ruin it.
Perfection is unattainable...but a great ride is completely doable!

12. Do you recommend these resources? yes.

13. What do you wish you knew going into this project? More about rails and how glassing and rails must be thought of. I know a lot about rails...but I didn't know how the glasser needs to work them. How to bring down the stringer properly.

14. What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Get a good spoke shave for bringing down the stringer Home depot won't have a good one.
15. What tools did you find most useful? My E-Z Square was good. Also
the side lights I built and the Surform. (the planer is scary at first) A real surfboard planer is different than the one you get at Home Depot. They can "feather" in the depth better. But not to worry. The Surform can do that too once the heavy lifting is done with your planer. I almost think a serious power sander (the kind auto body car detailers use ) would be a great investment for shaping foam. Then again that might make for some interesting gouges too.

16. Where did you run into trouble? my garage. bumping the foam on things moving it from the shaping racks to holding racks and through the door. (clean your space)

17. What kind of fin system did you use and why? 2+1 center box and FCS Fusion System. I like center boxes because moving the fin back and forth can make a HUGE difference. It can be the difference between crap and magic. The Fusion system finally allows a touch of this back and forth. But I still like Lokbox. I went with FCS because my cousins a rep for them and got me the plugs for free. Also my glasser does them.

18. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? No it's EPS. I am having Mark Schneider of Schneider Surfboards (San Diego CA) glass it. I don't need that kind of hassle in my garage.

19. Where did you shape and glass your board? San Diego, CA

20. What type of board do you want to make next? A hybrid version of a Larry Mabile Twinzer Fish with a different tail. Might end up looking a bit like a Von Sol Shadow...

21. Feel free to add any other input or interesting information you’d like… About templating: I used my AutoCAD program to print out a full scale sheet of paper for my template. Just cut out the board shape...laid it out on the board and painted off the edges. (I used a square block EPS blank. Only the rocker was built in.) It worked really well. Don't feel like you have to have Masonite templates and 15 different tail shapes. Cut it out of paper. Use your eye and square to even things up. If the board is a perfect ride...then template it. If not...you didn't waste tons of time transferring a dud onto masonite.

5. Why did you want to build your own board? I like building my own things. And also there was a lack of options on the S.U.P. market.

6. Shape of finished board? Short S.U.P. with “bat tail”.

7. Size of finished board: Length 8’5” Width 26” Thickness 4-1/2”

8. What blank did you use? EPS by U.S. Blanks.

9. How was your board building experience? It was a “love/hate” thing because it was first board. But I want to make another board again.

10. Did you use videos, books, web, other? I found most of my info on the web, asking other people, and my own personal experience.
11. What videos, books, web, other did you use? I found some stuff on You-tube, and everybody at Foam E-Z were SUPER helpful.
12. Do you recommend these resources? Yes.

13. What do you wish you knew going into this project? I should have better planned my shaping of the rails on the board.
14. What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Make sure you plan ahead for every detail.

15. What tools did you find most useful? Stanley rasp planer, Makita upright sander polisher (with 600 to 2000 rpm settings), and a tool I made that work as a sander/leveler/planer.

16. Where did you run into trouble? On the rails. I did not plan enough before I started.

17. What kind of fin system did you use and why? Future. Because they had good options to choose from with S.U.P. fins. They also seem stronger and durable.
18. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? Yes. It was scary at first, but I got used to it quickly and ended up enjoying it.
19. Where did you shape and glass your board? In a work shop that I am currently renting.
20. What type of board do you want to make next? Another S.U.P. in a wide tail fish shape.

21. As a tip to other people who want too make their own board. When you are mixing the epoxy in a measuring cup take a couple of minutes to make sure it is mixed well. Then pour it slowly into another clean cup (slowly so you don’t get many bubbles), get a brand new stirring stick, and continue mixing again. Doing this process will ensure that the resin is properly mixed, as epoxy is a high viscosity material. I also noticed that doing this seems to keep it from exotherming as quickly. And try to use a big stir stick like the ones they hand out at the hardware store for mixing paint.

4. How was your initial experience at Foam E-Z? Everyone was very friendly and helpful and they had everything I needed in stock to build my board.

5. Why did you want to build your own board? This board was shaped for a customer who wanted a hollow Redwood surfboard. I have wanted to shape this style of board for a while, and this order gave me the perfect excuse to finally do it. My customer was totally stoked when I delivered his new board.

6. Shape of finished board? I would call it a traditional Longboard with a pulled in tail.

7. Size of finished board: Length9’6” Nose 16 1/2" Width 20” Tail 9” Thickness 2 3/4”

8. What blank did you use? I chambered and laminated 19 pieces of California Redwood and Oregon Sugar Pine to create a hollow 9’8” blank with a 3.5” rocker.

9. How was your board building experience? Other than taking longer than anticipated (because of all the extra labor), the board building experience was smooth. It was definitely a learning experience to say the least.
10. Did you use videos, books, web, other? My board building experience has come from scrolling through the pages of Swaylocks, trial and error, and then back to Swaylocks for answers.
11. What videos, books, web, other did you use? I have seen the JC Shaping 101 and Glassing 101 which are good for reference.

12. Do you recommend these resources? Absolutely! They make you want to go out and shape a board.
13. What do you wish you knew going into this project? I wish I knew that everything was going to work as planned. I had to create my own rocker templates and cut channels in only the right places. Because every aspect of this board was my own design from conception to construction I was worried throughout the whole build that it would turn it ok, which it did.
14. What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Take your time, have fun, do lots of measuring, and where a mask!
15. What tools did you find most useful? My Clark foam planer was a must. The Milwaukee grinder with 8” Flexpad “Softie” was an absolute for shaping and sanding the hot coat, and a set of a dozen pipe clamps to laminate the different wood sections and a piece of dragon skin for blending the rails.
16. Where did you run into trouble? I underestimated how long it would take to channel each piece of redwood and shaping solid wood rails by hand. So, my customer got a killer deal on this labor intensive surfboard.

17. What kind of fin system did you use and why? Keeping with the wood theme I hand shaped a 9” vintage style fin made from African Paduak and Purple Heart, Honduran Mahogany, and American Walnut, glassed with a filet of fin rope and 4 layers of 6oz cloth on each side for plenty of strength.

18. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? Because of the redwoods natural strength I glassed 4oz cloth on the deck and bottom along with tail and deck patches. I used the Flex Pad Softie 8” with 80 and 150 grits, hand sanded 220 and 300 and finally, hand wet sanded 400, 600, and 800. With my buffpad, I started with the Foam E-Z Surfboard Polish #2 and finished with the Meguiars Surfboard Finish Polish. The results are a deep mirror like shine.

19. Where did you shape and glass your board? I glassed this board outside on a calm warm day.

20. What type of board do you want to make next? My next board is going to be a 5’11” fish with glass on keel fins made from exotic African hardwoods, made in the same style as this board except I will be using Redwood and Cedar to create a hollow wave rider.

21. Extra Info... I created a leash loop using fin rope and 4oz fiberglass. I felt that a leash plug would have detracted from the woods natural beauty. The nose and tail blocks are made from African Paduak and Yellow Heart.

5. Why did you want to build your own board? Save money and learn something that would ultimately be very useful for my hobby and my friends hobby.

9. How was your board building experience? This was my 5th board and first longboard. It went a lot smoother than the other four. Thinking maybe since I usually ride longer boards I maybe knew a bit more of what the end result should be.

10. Did you use videos, books, web, other? I spent a lot of time watching clips on the web, reading blogs. Ryan Lovelace, Gato. John Wesley is doing some great shapes. I think just constantly looking at boards that inspire you is a great source of reference. Above all that is simply just doing it...and most likely eating it on the first 2 or 3 shapes.

11. What videos, books, web, other did you use? Youtube/Vimeo, I found that watching a lot of DIY vids that people have put online show what not to do. Ha!
12. Do you recommend these resources? Of course. The more research the better.
13. What do you wish you knew going into this project? That my respirator was only for fumes! not fumes and particles. Wear a respirator!

14. What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Try to do it as right as you can the first time, because each step is dependent on the previous. Also..keep it simple. I did pigment my first try, but it wasn't til the 2nd board that I realized it is what made the board look like a disaster.

15. What tools did you find most useful? Surforms
16. Where did you run into trouble? I've ran into trouble trying to add too many elements into the board. Going to keep the next board a clear sanded finish.

17. What kind of fin system did you use and why? I stuck with the single fin on this one.

18. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? I did glass it. This one was better than the others. Smooth and glossy. I spent a lot of time making sure the board was dust free before glassing this time and it definitely helps.

19. Where did you shape and glass your board? My garage which now looks like a meth lab!
20. What type of board do you want to make next? Got a couple friends that want a copy of this one. So looks like the next two will be like this one.

How was your board building experience? Not at all what I expected. It was scary, fun, frustrating, learning experience, FUN. Little did I know just because you want a long board to cruise and have some high performance you can't have both, Grant knows I tried.
Did you use videos, books, web, other? Videos, Talk to some of the guys at different shops. Read some stuff on the internet.

What videos, books, web, other did you use? Used the Dick Brewer Video, Took some lessons from Grant @ Foam E-Z. Internet: Surfboard Design by Natural Curves Surfboards.

Do you recommend these resources? Yes. The Dick Brewer Video walks you through the steps, which is a lot of help, but doesn't really tell you why or how to do what he's showing you. The Surfboard Design was a lot of help telling you if you want your board to do this then do this. It also explains how each section works and explains what it does, like rocker, tails, rails, etc.

What do you wish you knew going into this project? What I know now. Patience.

What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Plan well even before you buy the blank. Think what you want the board to do, see what the 10 million experts say how to get that then pick one that sounds right for you. They are all right for them and the boards they sell. Watch the Videos, Read, Get help from someone who has shaped. It's not really rocket science just looks and acts like it. Measure everything 2 times put marks everywhere to help guide you. Patience and planning are the most important. If you plan on do this in the Garage then check out a true Shaping Room and try to set that up at Home.

What tools did you find most useful? Shaping Box at Foam E-Z, Tape measure, Planner (was not going to use at first), help from Grant.

Where did you run into trouble? The Rails. I didn't do both on the same day so trying to remember what I did on one so I could do it to the other was really hard. They are very close I don't think anybody can tell.

What kind of fin system did you use and why? Futures because that's what the glasser put in.
Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? OH Hell NO. Maybe next time. Shaping was scary enough.

Where did you shape your board? Started in My garage then The Box at Foam E-Z. Had Foam E-Z send it to their glasser.

What type of board do you want to make next? Either a 9'0" fun board. Or if I can't get my old Plastic Fantastic fixed (delaminated) replicate it.

After hours and hours of designing/learning I finally entered the door. At first I was intimidated but the staff was very helpful and encouraging.

Shorter long board for ease of catching and riding small waves.

I built my own sailboat when I was younger and since have built furniture and buildings and found making a surfboard as challenging as any of them.

Spent hours on Youtube, Swaylocks and thinking about what and how to do it. Made drawings and practice pieces of foam.

Cut laps are more work but can look fantastic. Want to be efficient at the shaping.

Do lots of research, ask questions, be patient, be thorough and think through the process
beforehand.

Having a steady hand for power planing and Surform and careful measuring devices with luck.

Difficult to make clean laps at nose and point of bat tail. Also getting an even overall color in epoxy is challenging.

I like Probox fin boxes for ease of installation and variety of fin angles. Have adapted Future Fins to fit.

18. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like?
Glassing is very challenging to use just enough resin evenly applied.

7’-6” Fat Fish.

4. How was your initial experience at Foam E-Z? as good as it gets. I got everything I needed and plenty of good advice from Grant. He's as handsome as he is helpful.

5. Why did you want to build your own board? I wanted to build this board because I was bored and it was the first second quality longboard blank I've seen that I wanted to use.

6. Shape of finished board? 9'1" pig

7. Size of finished board: Length 9’1” Nose 16ish” Width 21ish” Tail maybe 17” Thickness around 3” I wasn't very precise in my measurements and I didn't write them down. I didn't even use a proper template. I played connect the dots on the blank with the flat side of some template sitting in the shape box.

8. What blank did you use? 9'3"y second. I flipped it around to get the rocker and outline I wanted to fit.
9. How was your board building experience? getting better every time. There's a noticeable bump in the outline on one rail and my sanding wasn't perfect, but there's less to complain about than my previous boards.
10. Did you use videos, books, web, other? I read lots of stuff on Swaylocks. Plenty of ideas worth stealing there.

11. What do you wish you knew going into this project? The tail was going to delaminate pretty quickly with a dark fabric inlay in a hot van.

12. What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Realize that it's going to talk a lot of time and money to build boards. if it looks bad, it might still be fun to ride.

13. What tools did you find most useful? Good lighting and a good pad on my sander. Being able to use the Hitachi planer instead of my cheap Harbour Freight was weird at first until I got the hang of adjusting the cut's depth.

14. Where did you run into trouble? When I thought I was almost done shaping the blank and turned on the sidelights for the first time and realized it was a bumpy mess.

15. What kind of fin system did you use and why? I made a big thick plywood fin and glassed it on. I still haven't bothered learning to do fin boxes. Plywood is way cheaper and easier than fiberglass.

16. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? Glassing went well. It's the longest board I've glassed as well as the first time with Volan, but I didn't run into many problems.

4. How was your initial experience at Foam E-Z? Everyone was very friendly and helpful and they had everything I needed in stock to build my board.

5. Why did you want to build your own board? This board was actually shaped for a customer who wanted an unusual shape somewhere in between a longboard and shortboard with a fish like tail (actually his dream board).

6. Shape of finished board? I named it “The Fatty Fat Fish”. It is a truly unconventional shape that incorporates elements from several different board shapes. Goes against the norm but does everything the customer wanted it to (even nose rides).

7. Size of finished board: Length7’6” Nose 17 ¼” Width 22” Tail 18 ¾” Thickness 2 3/8”

8. What blank did you use? This board was cut form a US Blanks 9-3Y (so I could get the wide inverse swallow tail)

9. How was your board building experience? This board was a little trickier to shape than most I’ve done in the past, especially the inverse curve on the tail. I added a generous single concave to the nose and a slight V in the tail, which has lots of flex.

16. Where did you run into trouble? The only trouble I ran into was the cold weather. It made for extra sanding to smooth out the hot coats that didn’t pour as smooth as I would have liked.

17. What kind of fin system did you use and why? I chose the Futures Vector 2 Quad setup for hold and drive and placed the front fins about ¾” higher to give it a little looser ride. I prefer the Futures installation jig, its like second nature to me. I have always been pleased with Futures fins and that is why I use them on all of my boards.

18. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? Glassing went better than previous boards (I think it always does though). I did a 6+4 on the deck and a 4 on the bottom. I added a lot of laminates so I had to pay close attention to drying times and work fast, but it turned out really well.

19. Where did you shape and glass your board? My garage/shop. I had a commercial site with a sweet shaping bay but my operation got shutdown by the man (I guess only a surfer appreciates the familiar smell of catalyzed surf resin).

20. What type of board do you want to make next? My next board is going to be a 9’2” longboard with a step deck and then a super wide 5’ fish.

21. Extra Info... The nose and tail blocks are actually balsa end cuts that came from the old Velzy Jacobs shop in Venice. I bought a big box of it from a guy who used to shape there in the 50’s. This board surfs amazing! I just happened to be there the first day it was taken out. Since then the shape and paint scheme have gotten tons of complements and head turns every time it’s ridden.

Hey guys. I've been in your shop a a few times, and the Green newsletter reminded me to send a picture of the board I shaped last year with the SuperSap 100/1000.
I stripped, reshaped, and repurposed the fins from an old 8'6". So it's pretty green... err yellow. I think I'll mix a pigment in with the next one.
Pretty happy with the result for a first time. I'm committed to home-shapes for life now.
It's called "The Nannie" after my daughter, Nan.

9. How was your board building experience? Great and made all the better with the assistance of Foam E-Z for getting me whatever I need to build boards.

10. Did you use videos, books, web, other? Not recently, but there are some good ones that Foam E-Z sells that can show you some good stuff. The Master Shaper and Glasser series are probably the best.

11. What videos, books, web, other did you use? Always reading every Surf journal and book I can get my hands on. You see a lot of cool boards for ideas that way.

12. Do you recommend these resources? Absolutely.

13. What do you wish you knew going into this project? How quickly this board would sell. It really was A LOT of work to build and having someone grab it up so quick was gratifying and a relief.

14. What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Be patient, never rush, don’t settle for good enough, do your absolute best.

15. What tools did you find most useful? My Clark planer and Milwaukee grinder are indispensable as well as my block planes, surforms and custom made sanding pads and well worn screen. 17. What kind of fin system did you use and why? Fins Unlimited 10.5 inch single fin box. It is a solid set-up and allows for many different fins to be used in different positions. Also, the neutral feel of a single fin is the perfect compliment to a glider board like this.

13. What do you wish you knew going into this project? That I’d move three times, break up with my girlfriend twice, and get really busy at work.
14. What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Practice patience and have another board to surf in case the swell comes up and you want to go surf. Eat really well, educate your mind, listen to good music, and have some extra cash for when you get hooked.

15. What tools did you find most useful? My ears, just listening to the talented shapers and glassers. A rooter would be nice. I like the vibe of using all hand tools, but it’s slow, so some big ol’ power tools would be rock-n-roll.

16. Where did you run into trouble? Got a little carried away shaping, I whittled the thing into a toothpick. I used a real outline form the second time. Furthermore, I didn’t wet the laps enough on the bottom so when I pulled the rails they got a bit dry which led to bunching later on in the build. I also forgot to put the leash plug in which was pretty amateur.
17. What kind of fin system did you use and why? Futures, a stronger, more efficient system; and I like their fins.

18. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? Yes, a bit tricky but one of my favorite parts of board building. So fun, especially the Super Sap – the maple syrup smell is kind of trippy if you’re used to the headache old school stuff.

19. Where did you shape and glass your board? Shaped at Foam E-Z in the back, like a regular home style coffee shop over there. Nice guys, good ideas, and they don’t mind if you take your time. I glassed my board at my buddy, John Summerville’s woodshop in LA. He makes world-class custom boats and furniture. He had some essential tools around to make things a bit more convenient and a good guy to kick back with as everything dries.
20. What type of board do you want to make next? I already shaped a 5’6” extra wide quad. Minimal rocker, strong V out the tail. Super fast and loose. I customized the glass on this one with a brown bottom with flicks of blue, orange, and yellow, with a white pin line. Next is a 7’6” fun board for a friend, and a DVS inspired quad fish for myself.

13. What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Don’t be afraid to try shaping. The initial investment may be steeper than you’d like, but the accomplishment you’ll feel afterward is WAY worth it. Don’t expect a perfect board, it’ll look something like a surfboard and it’ll be surfable. Watch JC’s Shaping 101. And wear a respirator; you don’t want this stuff in your lungs. Use slow curing resin when glassing for the first time.

14. What tools did you find most useful? Electric Planer, Rounded Surform blade, Sanding Block, Calipers made from scrap plywood

15. Where did you run into trouble? Glassing the channels.

16. What kind of fin system did you use and why? NONE! (I’ve been waiting for this question =P)

17. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? Yep, Grant challenged me with using R&R Kwik Kick and it didn’t prove to be too tough. Hardest part is blue tinting on EPS with 4 deep channels. The bat tail another difficulty to add on top of it all.

Hey Foamez,

I just built my first board and got it out on the water a couple of times. I was hoping to get some advice / constructive criticism.

That being said...this was my first board I've ever made (all hand tools, from FOAM-EZ, represent). I realize it's far from perfect and has many mistakes (which are visible). I took the approach that more foam is better than less when it came time to hack off more to fix mistakes.

My nose and tail are to thick and the outline has a few small kinks. I tried to keep my rails pretty standard, round 50/50 and was fairly successful. My goal was to make a great lake board that was thick and wide as possible. It's about 2 3/4" thick in the center and about 22" wide. I kept the rocker pretty standard to how it came, so I don't think there is a lot of issue there.

It drops in real nice and grabs real small waves..but once underway it loses power and is hard to keep going. It turns great though. A lot of it I'm guessing is from small closed out waves we get most of the time.

Being in Wisconsin, I didn't exactly have a lot of resources to use, so I did a lot of things on a trial and error system, if you know what I mean.

My real question is: the overall outline/proportion of the board. I wonder if there is to much board in the bottom 2/3 area or more board should have been pulled towards the top? Or maybe not, I was wondering if I could get your advice on the overall shape and proportion of the board.

I appreciate you taking the time very much. I attached some pics of it and in the water to try and get a better idea.

Can't wait to start on my next board. Any idea when you'll get some marko 9'6" blanks in?

First off, congrats on building your first board all the way through, that in itself is a huge accomplishment that you should be proud of!! It's always difficult to give constructive criticism through pics/email but I'll try. Regarding your outline, you gotta remember that it all starts with the plan shape. If you start with a nice flowing outline without kinks and bumps then you set the tone for the rest of the shape job and vic-a-versa. In surfboard design there is no right or wrong because it is up to the shaper to design a board for specific conditions, the surfers experience, and weight/size. So if it looks like there is a bit too much volume in one area of the board then you're probably on to something. The thing to remember is that you learn from each board, try not to make the same error twice, and to have fun with it. I think you're on the right track. Thanks for sharing this with us and let us know if we can help you out in the future.

After performing numerous repairs on existing boards: everything from nose repairs, tails, rails, spider/ hairline cracks, delams, FCS fin plug repairs, I decided to try my luck at shaping a board. I was frustrated with constantly repairing old boards. Winter was also around the corner, and my boards were in no shape to handle the incoming swells. My goal was to shape a board that would be tough and durable.

After determining my dimensions, I used BoardCAD and AKUshaper to design my template. Using a surform and sanding block I shaped my first handshape. Paddling out on my first board was the most rewarding.

I’d highly recommend his video, he shows and explains a lot of technique and design concepts of shaping an average thruster. Greg Leohr shows you how to shape a fishboard as well which was nice and the camera quality is better, but I found JC’s dialogue much better for learning and amusing too.

13. What do you wish you knew going into this project? I wish I knew a more accurate way to measure the rocker. Wish I knew how to accept the fact that it wasn’t going to be perfect better. As for glassing, wish I knew to keep my laps cleanly cut.

14. What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Don’t be afraid to try shaping. The initial investment may be steeper than you’d like, but the accomplishment you’ll feel afterwards is wayyy worth it. 16. Where did you run into trouble? Routing the finboxes. I used the Future Fins routing kit and followed the instructions exactly but my deep cut was not deep enough. I had to extend the drill bit further and re-route multiple passes making sure the slot doesn’t get too deep.

18. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? Glassing was messy! It’s a whole different skill to master. Glassing in the finboxes was scary after reading horror stories of people melting their boards from overheating and exotherming. My fears were increased as the resin in my cup became too hot to hold and the cup started melting. I ran to the freezer for icepacks. I’d recommend using a slow curing resin to install your first set of finboxes, it’ll help with the sweating and panicking you’ll experience.

surfing I knew I wanted to one day become a shaper. Building and

can have as a surfer and gives you the ultimate ability to dial in
your equipment. The best part is knowing that whether you build
one board or one-hundred, you have contributed to the amazing
lifestyle that is surfing and have become more than just a consumer.

13. What do you wish you knew going into this project? Having never
shaped this type of board, I would have liked to know a few more
tricks for shaping more efficiently. Thanks to a close familiarity
with this style log, having ridden many, I eventually ended up
with just what I wanted, but it took me much longer than it should
have.

14. What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? I
feel the most important thing when shaping is to understand how
boards work. If you know what makes a board work you will be able
to figure it out what you need to do to shape the board you want.

15. What tools did you find most useful? A good power planer (Hitachi
in my case), sharp Surform and a padded sanding block are a
must. The E-Z Square for measuring out the template is a gift from god…

16. Where did you run into trouble? I got stuck about half way… I mean
really stuck… figuring out the bottom contours of this board. I
literally had to just stop and take a break to think it over
before I continued. I knew I wanted to give it a lot of belly so
the board would hold back easier in the pocket, but didn’t wan to
make it too slow. Eventually I just threw some MUSE on the stereo
and went and went for it.

17. What kind of fin system did you use and why? I hand-foiled a 9.5”
plywood pivot fin to be glassed on after I had finished shaping
the board. I set the fin 2” from the tail to give plenty of drive
and stability through turns and gave it a moderate rake to keep it
lively.

18. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? I had
this one expertly glassed next door at Aloha and highly recommend
their work. I have glassed a board, however, and it was a huge
learning experience. I think every shaper should at least know how
to glass a board.

19. Where did you shape your board? I shaped it right out

20. What type of board do you want to make next? I am coming in later
this week to shape a 9’6” classic cruiser for my father. I’m

longboard fin box. The propeller is in place to replace paddling.
The board will propel itself out to the line-up and into a wave. Once riding a wave, the board uses the forward motion produced from the wave to continue to spin the propeller and produce energy from the electric motor. This energy is stored to recharge the batteries. The board is essentially a miniature wave energy power plant. The board uses a small commercially available electric trolling motor and a 12V 7.2amp-hr battery. Wires run along the deck of the board under the glass next to the stringer from the battery housing back to the motor.

As this board was a prototype there were some problems. It was difficult to keep the battery compartment on the top deck of the board waterproof. It was flooded with water several times. Somehow the motor continued to work even when flooded, but I was shocked a few times when trying to take the battery out of the flooded compartment back on shore. The board itself was huge. It turned out to be overbuilt and did not need to be quite that large. It is a 10'8" x 30" x 5.5" SUP. I first tried the board out at the Santa Ana River jetties just because it was close and I wanted to get it into the water right when it was finished. The board powered through the crashing waves and quickly got me to the line-up, but it was very
difficult to actually ride a wave because of the size of the board.
It does not turn easily and it tends to pearl. I was able to catch a few waves there, but I had much more success at SanO. The problem at SanO, though, was that the seaweed floating around in the water kept getting caught on the propeller.

Work is still being done on this project as a hobby. Future developments will have everything housed in a single attachment that can fit into a standard longboard fin box. This way any longboard can be modified with this device. We won't have to worry about running wired to a battery housing on the top deck anymore. I am also working on incorporating a flow sensor that will detect the speed of the board while riding a wave and adjust the speed of the motor to counteract the drag caused by the motor. A wireless motor controller that you can wear around a wrist is also being developed.

How was your initial experience at Foam E-Z? Great, the crew is very helpful, and full of knowledge.

Why did you want to build your own board? It seems as though when you go to the surf shops these days all of the boards are built to be an “every-man’s” board. To me that means they do all the basic things a boards should do, without actually doing anything well. So to find that diversity it’s best to look at your own style of surfing and try to make something that will work well for you as an individual. And if it doesn’t work like you thought, then you’ve learned something new because you’re riding something that isn’t just a basic all-arounder type shape.

Shape of finished board? 5’11 Fish. Thick with thin pulled down rails with belly in the belly and "V" in the tail.

Size of finished board: Length 5’11 Nose 16 ½ Width 21 ½ Tail 17 Thickness 2 ¾

What blank did you use? 6’5 A. I picked this blank so that I could pull the template back a few inches and cut some of the rocker out of the nose giving me a flatter entry rocker.

How was your board building experience? Great. I used the E-Z Shaping Box at the shop for the second time. I love the Shaping Box, it’s totally set up, I can get in there, shape, rent whatever tools I don’t have, and then just sweep up and walk out. Way better than having a shaping room in my garage.

Did you use videos, books, web, other? I did not. This one came entirely out of my head. Because it was such a funky design, I tried not to pull ideas from other shapers, otherwise it would be that much less unique.

Do you recommend these resources? I recommend trying new things with your surfing and board building. It helps you put things in perspective and look at what you love from another point of view.

What do you wish you knew going into this project? How to better do a fabric inlay. I get the feeling that my fabric didn’t lam up too well, and am kind of afraid of the board delaminating in the future. But I’ll just deal with that when and if it comes along.

What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Know what you want to shape before you even buy your blank. Know exactly what you want, because if you go into a project like this with an uncertain idea of what you want to end up with, even if you’re just torn between two designs it will never come out quite right.

What tools did you find most useful? TAPE!!!! I know I’m getting ahead of myself, but doing a cut-lap on the rail, using tape actually takes just a short time to set up, but saves a lot of time in sanding. Tape is your friend.

Where did you run into trouble? This board actually went very smoothly. The only thing that kinda bummed me out was when I built up my hotcoat on the tail so I could get a nice down rail, I built it up too thick, and it cracked. No biggie…it kinda gives it character. But next time I’ll know not to kick it so hot if I’m going to pool it so deep.

What kind of fin system did you use? I glassed on a pair of custom keels that I made.

Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? I did. It was messy, stinky, and left my patio looking like an abused armadillo dying in a pile of tape, resin covered brushes and fiberglass dust.

What supplies were purchased from Foam E-Z? all of them. Everything from the blank to the armadillo! Ok, except the razor blades and the fabric. I got those from JoAnn’s fabric right down the street.

3. How did you hear about us? I heard about Foam E-Z through several shapers I have known over the years and was finally put in contact by my buddy Mark who works there.

4. How was your initial experience at Foam E-Z? It was good. There was plenty of inventory to browse through when selecting a blank, including seconds in almost every size, which helped me stay within a tight budget and still build a completely functional board. The staff were all really helpful and knowledgeable, and just seemed genuinely stoked to see me getting into shaping. Having access to a proper shaping bay was hands down the biggest benefit.

5. Why did you want to build your own board? As long as I’ve been surfing (12 years) I have been deeply fascinated by the colorful history of surfboard innovation and design. I love how each and every handcrafted surfboard is completely unique in its own way and the pure creative artistry that goes into that. I’ve been blessed with artistic abilities my entire life and always knew I had it in me to become a successful shaper but never actually tried. Finally I just decided it was time to make it happen. Paddling out for the first time on a board I built was easily my proudest day as a surfer.

10. Did you use videos, books, web, other? I had collected a lot of knowledge throughout the years through all kinds of sources, but mostly from listening to and watching other shapers. My buddy Mark from Foam E-Z was there to walk me through the whole process; so I owe most to him.

11. What videos, books, web, other did you use? Just a little bit of web browsing.

12. Do you recommend these resources? I honestly recommend talking with shapers, asking questions and watching anyone who will let you. I’ve sat in and watched Rich Harbour and Tim Stamps shape boards start to finish. They didn’t explain what they were doing and I didn’t bug them with questions, but I learned so much just from watching. If you can have anyone help you out through that first board that’s got to be the best way.

13. What do you wish you knew going into this project? Honestly, I felt about as prepared as I could be. Having an experienced shaper there to help me out filled in all the gaps and gave me the confidence I needed to build the board I really wanted.

14. What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Pretty much what I said to question 12. Look at every kind of surfboard and learn what it does, how and why… every kind of board. You’ve got to know the mechanics behind surfboards if you’re going to have any chance of building a functional board. Ask and listen. If you can, get help.

15. What tools did you find most useful? The Hitachi power planer is a Godsend and I’ll never shape without one. Other than that, a nice sharp sure-form and a proper sanding block made life nice and easy. Skip the 2x4 and spend the few extra bucks on a proper block and you’ll save sanding time and come out with more even rails.

16. Where did you run into trouble? I was a bit sketched out about shaping my rails with the power planer at first, but after a little demonstration by Mark I realized how useful it was. During the glassing process it was a bit difficult tucking all the rails before the resin gelled and keeping bubbles out of the seams while laminating. We were really conserving resin though, so I’d probably recommend spending a few more bucks to buy some wiggle room. Defiantly don’t try glassing your first board without help. Mark really saved my ass there…

17. What kind of fin system did you use? I fabricated an 8.5” raked single-fin glass-on from a box fin (the base got turned into the leash loop).

18. Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? Yeah, we glassed it in my garage on top of a card table and a cardboard box. As a mentioned for question 12, it was a bit difficult at parts, but not bad as long as you have somebody there who knows what they’re doing. Shaping and glassing the board was even more rewarding. That’s how they had to do it back in the day and it remains a skill I feel every shaper should have. Being able to call yourself not just a shaper but a “board builder” is pretty special these days.

19. What supplies were purchased from Foam E-Z? I picked up the blank and all the glassing materials from Foam E-Z and borrowed the tools from Mark. I plan on purchasing my own set of tools through Foam E-Z for the next board. The selection is quality and the prices seem reasonable.

How was your initial experience at Foam E-Z? Great, I remember the first time I came in, the guys were all very helpful in picking out the right blank and letting me know what tools I would need to get started without selling me a bunch of stuff that I wouldn’t need as a first time board builder. One of the best resources now is the shaping box…It’s a fully set up shaping room available for rent. Also available for rent are all the tools necessary to really get a good feel for shaping. It’s a great way to try out the expensive tools (such as the industry standard Hitachi planer) without breaking the bank your first time out.

Why did you want to build your own board? I’ve always felt that if you love doing something, you should explore all aspects of whatever it is. Learning the history and culture of surfing and shaping is huge and very eye opening. The more time you spend around board building the better grasp you get of how boards work, and it not only makes you a better surfer, but also makes you a more versed individual who is in tune to what’s going on in the line up.

Shape of finished board? Longboard. This one in particular was made to be thinner than most with slightly turned down rails and a round outline. I wanted a log that was wide and stable but still loose and fast enough not to be too clunky.

Size of finished board: Length 9’6” Nose 17" Width 23 ½” Tail 16 ½” Thickness 2 ¾”

What blank did you use? 9’8 Y because it has more continual rocker from the nose to the tail and offered enough extra space to move the template around and play with different ideas

How was your board building experience? My experience was great. Being as I shaped in the box I had relatively little clean up because of the vacuum attachment which collects all of the planer dust. This also kept me from getting buckets of foam dust in my eyes which can be entirely too frustrating. Between the facilities and the advice of the guys working there I felt like I went into it with more confidence than if I’d just picked up a blank and started hacking away.

Did you use videos, books, web, other? I watched the JC video on shaping (shaping 101) and also picked up the surfboard construction and design book. I found both very helpful. Not to mention there is a lot of footage on youtube.com and posts on swaylocks.com which help answer any left over questions

What videos, books, web, other did you use? Refer to question 10…guess I jumped the gun.

Do you recommend these resources? I definitely recommend some form of instruction, be it through books, videos, or endlessly browsing the web. There are so many little things that a person wouldn’t even think to do, or would never know without some form of prior research.

What do you wish you knew going into this project? I wish someone would have told me to take my time while I was glassing and finish sanding. I’m a very impatient person and wanted nothing more than to get the board in the water…needless to say, it isn’t as pretty as it would have been had I taken the time to grind my laps and work my way up to 600grit instead of finishing out at 120g and calling it good enough. But I guess I can always go back and sand it later if I feel like it.

What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Take your time. You don’t have to finish in a few hours like the pros do. The more time you take the more likely you will be to finish out with something you’ll be proud to take down to the beach and show off.

What tools did you find most useful? There’s so many, now that I’ve tried them all I don’t know if I could live without them. First and foremost I LOVE the EZ Square which helped keep my outline straight and even, without it I’m convinced my board would look like a crinkly fry from Del taco. The planer is awesome; being able to take the skin off the blank in a few passes as opposed to a few hours makes worlds of difference. And finally the shaping blocks with the foam pads that attach with Velcro. They work better than a normal piece of wood by giving you a forgiving padded sanding surface that isn’t too soft or too hard.

Where did you run into trouble? I hit a bump with my sanding block. I was using a normal piece of 2” X 6” wood, or a piece of upholstery foam. The issue was that my sanding blocks were either too hard or too soft. I came to a point while finish shaping where I was just working against myself by making more deep scratches or uneven spots. That’s why I went in and bought one of the shaping blocks that they sell in the showroom. I got the one with the medium (yellow) pad and found that all the extra scratches and uneven spots I was getting from my other blocks were taken out immediately just by having the right type of backing to my sand paper/screen.

What kind of fin system did you use? I went traditional and glassed on my fin. But that was only because I didn’t own a router and buying fin-rope and an extra yard of glass seemed like it would be cheaper than buying an install kit. Though I must say, that will definitely be my next investment. The ability to change and try different fins is huge, and if I want to sell the board I’m sure any potential buyer will appreciate the ability to make the board perform to his or her liking as opposed to being stuck with the fin that I liked best.

Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? MESSY. STINKY. And FUN. Glassing is something that every surfer should do at least once so that they can appreciate all of the great glass jobs that can be found on any surf shop sales rack. Besides, it’s part of board building, and if you short cut yourself by skipping a step in the process just because of a little mess then you’ll never fully understand the boards you’re riding.

What supplies were purchased from Foam E-Z? I ended up buying more than I’d planned on. The things that I didn’t buy I used in the kit that I rented (and I will end up buying all of those tools too). I had such a great time shaping that I will definitely do it again, and I’m sure that means picking up every tool to make my future creations as dialed in as possible.

After surfing shop boards for 3-4 years, I thought it would be cool to ride a board that was built to my specifications and built by myself. Also, I thought it would be a great experience.

How was your board building experience?
My experience was great. It took a decent amount of time but I believe there is nothing better than riding a board that you built yourself.

ABSOLUTELY. It's the best source on the web without a doubt.

What do you wish you knew going into this project?
I wish I knew it would take as long as it did.

What would you recommend to someone else for their first time?
Take your time, ask questions, and just go for it.

What tools did you find most useful?
All I used to build my board was sandpaper, a Surform, and a hand plane.

Where did you run into trouble?
I ran into trouble skinning the deck of the board, the mini hand plane seemed to tear the foam but after a long time sanding I finally got it done.

What kind of fin system did you use?
ProBox Quad with standard production set quads.

Did you glass the board and what was that experience like?
Yes, I glassed the board myself. I had a friend come over and help me glass the bottom and I glassed the deck myself. My biggest tip would be to use UV resin because after you are done you can just stick the board in the sun and wait for it to cure, you don't have to rush with it. Also, many people out there say to glass clear on your first board but using pigment did not add any trouble for me when I glassed the board so do what you want in regards to color.

How was your initial experience at the shop? Well I come here for most all my supplies. Close to home and handy.

What supplies were purchased from foam easy? Resin, blank, fiberglass, tints and pigments, UV catalyst, MEKP catalyst, leash plug, polish, squeegee, sanding pad.

Why did you want to build your own board? I’ve been doing my boards now for about 2 years, in my garage, shaping, glassing, resin color. I want to get to the “Master” level. HaHa! Maybe someday.

Shape of finished board? This board is an 11’ retro gentleman’s gun. With Black and blue stripes and a blue tint flood

How was this board building experience? This one was a lot of work, 10 hours shaping the blank. I swear I was mind melting with it.

Did you use videos, books, web, other? Yes got some gun dimensions from the Kauai and California North Shore guys and did some adjusting to get the shape. Still learning the resin color do’s and dont's . But I got glassing down pretty good now.

What do you wish you knew going into this project? Resin color control

What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Start with a simple shape and clear glass job. Don’t be afraid and do all preparation before executing.

What tools did you find most useful? Power planer, Surform, sand block, power sander, and my hand’s, eye’s and brain (what’s left of it!!).

Where did you run into trouble? Resin coloring. I wanted crisper more pointy stripes. But the customer loved it the way it came out.

Glass on or box fins? What kind? Big custom glass on. Fin shape from Robin Mair of Kauai, foiled by Larry Alison of Fibre Glass Fin Co.

Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? Yes I did. On this board It was my fourth resin color job. I thought I was sure what to do to achieve the effect that I was going for, but the stripes bled on me and didn’t come out pointy like I wanted.

Why did you want to build your own board? Wanted a quad fish with a retro vibe and just couldn’t swing the money for what I wanted. Also I’ve always been a DIY kinda guy and thought that it would deepen my connection with surfing in the grand scheme of things

How was your board building experience? Intense it was a lot like sculpture design or pottery where it’s a multistep process that takes shape and becomes your vision as you go.

Do you recommend these resources? Absolutely, the more info and ideas/viewpoints you can get the better.

What do you wish you knew going into this project? More trick tips on cleaner lap lines, resin tinting, fabric inlay, methods for perfecting concave design.

What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? DON’T RUSH!

What tools did you find most useful? Microblades replacement blades saved time on the blank and finish sanding, good sharp trim plane, power sander, Futures Install Jig/Kit.

Where did you run into trouble? Cutting in my concave for evenness was a battle. I finally got it but there’s gotta be a methodical approach rather than “eyeing it”.

What kind of fin system did you use? FUTURES, the install kit I got from Foam E-Z was badass!!! Simplified things immensely and was easy to use right outta the box.

Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? Yes I did glass the board it was my second board I’ve ever done and it was better than the first. For your first I was told to not mess with resin tints and pigments which was great advice because it allowed me to focus more on laps and clean lines. For this board I jumped up to the plate and did a Paisley fabric inlay on the deck and green resin tint to put some pop in the overall look. I tried to lay the tint uneven to give the appearance of water color paintings- came out awesome still need to work on perfecting concaves and lap lines. The biggest thing I can say to first time shaper/glasser is; TAKE YOUR TIME AND IT WILL SHINE THRU IN THE END!!!!!

Why did you want to build your own board? I used to have HDX (cutting service) to do my boards for me, and I would always help at different stages and learn. As HDX grew and I learned more, I decided to tackle the craft on my own.

Shape of finished board? The one I’m showing is a swallow tail fish. My 4^th board, start to finish.

What do you wish you knew going into this project? How to make resin color swirls; when you squeegee it the colors blend into mud color (not good). You have to pour the entire surface before pulling off the excess resin. When masking a cut-lap on foam to press the tape down with a plastic card (colored cut-lap bled a little). What’s the best polishing technique.

What would you recommend to someone else for their first time? Prepare before executing.

Where did you run into trouble? Sanding the hot coat, sanded through in a few spots, but I fixed them.

What kind of fin system? Probox Fin Systems - quad fin box set up, twin keel fins installed.

Did you glass the board and what was that experience like? Yes I did. It was my first resin color job. I wasn’t sure what to do to achieve the effect that I was going for, but I got the bottom close and the deck mudded on me a little. All in all it came out good. The pin lines pulled it all together. The first guy who saw it, bought it!!!
